The unforgiving sunlight of the wastelands beats down mercilessly upon your body. How many days have passed since I set out? Has a week passed already? Supplies and food have long since run dry in this harsh land. As fatigue begins to hit, I began to feel my mind slipping as if caught in a web of drunken confusion. What was I looking for? Who was I looking for? Will I ever find this place or person in this hellish landscape? Am I ever going to make it back home alive? Each thought ricocheted through my mind like stray bullets in an empty street. Each day felt longer and long with each and every step I took. After 2 weeks of skulking through the wastes, the creeping shadow of my destination begins to shroud over the horizon. However, I know that no matter how many hardships you have handled and whatever dangers you have faced, they all pale in comparison to what lies ahead. Less than a mile ahead, you at last find your destination in sight. Shrouded under the mist, a gray stone scar upon this world's surface that seems to reach out toward the heavens above me. A furious and dark energy can be felt from within this strange structure; as if it were forcing all things near to cower in fear under its dark might. I cannot stop here; I have lost far too much and sacrificed all that I am and have in order to achieve the strength I have now. For a while, I stared upon the structure from a distance, unsure of how to approach it. The winds of the desert whipped around me, as if the land itself were warning me to turn back before it were too late. If only it could understand me, it would know that I cannot turn back, for there is nothing for me to turn back to. After a final search of my soul and mental preparation, I collect my material, prepare my armaments and make my way toward the earthen citadel. Untitled, created by *katenfelix, presents us with a creative landscape that while it may lack a name, it still carries quite a bit of personal creativity and inspiration that was placed into its overall design. While appearing a bit unpolished at first, one can see that underneath some of the tarnish, there is truly something to behold underneath if one digs deep enough.
Starting off with the good, I have to say that I like the overall atmosphere that is presented to the viewer of this piece. The dark tones of the shadows from the landscape create a sort of claustrophobic feeling within the piece as if the darkness around is trying its best to choke off all light from this land. The solitary character in the foreground builds onto this sense of isolation within the piece and adds that much more depth to the design style presented. The dilapidated buildings in the background before the jagged rock formations, can give off a little more from the story of this painting. Perhaps this place was once abandoned before something forced others to leave. Maybe the foreground character has something to do with the landscape's current appearance and lack of habitation. All of these elements prove how well this piece can inspire imagination from its viewers wondering more about its mystery and somber beauty.
While there are quite a few things that resonate well for this piece, there are just a few places that could use a bit of refinement. For example, some of the foreground details can do with a little fleshing out. Perhaps make some of the textures on the landscape more refined and recognizable. Instead much of the ground environment carries a texture upon it that looks a bit hastily sketched and gives off more of the appearance of a speed painted style. Try and refine more of the shapes of area. The rock face textures look very "photoshoped" in and clash with the appearance of the rest of the composition. Try and modify them to blend a bit better with their respective locations and placement to better meld with the piece itself. Perhaps add even a thin fog around the ground to build on to the atmosphere in the composition and even give the landscape more of cinematic edge to it all. Keep experimenting with what you have and don't be afraid to try new things with the overall design you have presented here.
Each and every portrait and painting before us presents us to so many different times, lands and universes. All with their own blend of personality and style mixed within each and every one of them. Untitled is not exception to this very rule. Although there's some parts of it that need a bit of work and refinement, there are still quite a few elements that make it stand out. It shares quite a bit of personality and artistic personality within it more than warrant a viewing of any viewer. Nice work Jesper.
