A somber and desolate piece, "a nice place" gives a feeling almost of standing on the edge of the earth, or at the end of time. This feels like a sacred place, almost a last refuge in a world that has gone extinct.
The colors are likewise somber and cold.. dark yet comforting. Bits of color are intermingled throughout adding depth of interest.
The brushwork is just fine and adds to the feel of things.
The composition is fine and yet could be perhaps extended either to the right side a bit more, to put the tree in a golden-ratio-type position and not so near-but-not-quite-in-the-center... or extended to the left so as to put the tree right in the center.
The composition, as far as the layout goes is lovely but my main concern is for the receding mountain structure... You see the cliffs to the right extending into the horizon, and just as they pass the tree there is a rather too sudden and intense atmospheric diminishment. It appeared at first to me that the cliffs folded back and then came out again, sort of like a second mountain behind a first, but as I look closer I can see it's all one receding cliff face that doesn't really go back all that far.
Perhaps more importantly is that this receded cliff face seems to connect right to the horizon, which makes it almost seem right as far as the atmospheric diminishment, but is confusing as it doesn't make sense. It's a bit like an impossible MC Escher drawing, at least as far as I read it.
The tone of the whole drawing is in some aspect dark, but one of the most lovely parts is the lush green grass, and the glow on the tree, the one real source of life, sustenance, hope; the last stand and a comfort in an vast, apocalyptic-feeling world.
